2011 Hooker Day Parade

Reverend Thomas Hooker led 100 men, women & children in search of a home for their congregational church and founded Hartford in 1636. Reverend Hooker is considered the Founding Father of Hartford. So what does this have to do with the Hooker Day Parade? In the early 1990’s former Mayor Mike Peters, in recoginition of the “founding father” and as part of Mayor Mike’s plan to revitalize Hartford, organized the first official Hooker Day Parade.

This was the first Hooker Day Parade I attended and it was everything I had heard it would be, and more. It was a hoot! Part Mardi Gras, part Mummer Parade, part Halloween celebration – the parade was led by current Hartford’s mayor Pedro Segarra dressed as Thomas Hooker (of course) and other City officials.

There were neighborhood groups from South Downtown, Frog Hollow and Sheldon Charter Oak; Pucky the Whale, the Hartford Area Roller Derby and the CT Roller Girls from the sports world; Mimes, clowns, hula hoop dancers, and four guys on motor skooters. In addition, there was live musical entertainment: the band from the Classical Magnet School (boy those kids are good!), two bands on flat bed trucks (hope no one needed a tow!) – one playing rock music and the other playing island music; three gentlemen played rock music on guitars and drums as they walked, and bring up the rear was the Joseph A. Ferko String Band, a Mummer Band from Philadelphia. All the bands were great! The parade participants dressed in festive attire and walked the parade route tossing beads and candy to the crowd of onlookers. The 2011 Hooker Day Parade was a terrific, moving street party. My husband and I had a wonderful time and look forward to attending next year’s Hooker Day Parade.
